Join Sally Spencer at Orchard Jewellery Workshop in Kingswood, Bristol for a one-day workshop where you'll discover the fascinating world of diamonds! Learn the secrets of Gemology, including knowledge of durability and how to examine stones.

A fun & interactive one-day workshop taking students through the fascinating world of diamonds

  • their natural formation
  • the history of cutting & polishing
  • diamond grading
  • imitation stones
  • synthetic (laboratory grown) diamonds
  • identifying diamonds & their imitations

Students will also have the opportunity to see a selection of diamonds, imitators & simulants, demonstrating examples of some of the subjects we will discuss.

The day is suitable for everyone with an interest in gemstones & will be a mixture of theory & practical work.

A copy of the Jewellers’ quick reference guide to working with gemstones is not necessary for the day but Sally will bring some with her in case anyone would like to buy one. I use my copy most days as it's a valuable resource in the studio!

Information for students

Please bring reading glasses if you use them.  If you wear varifocal or bifocal glasses & have a pair of prescription reading glasses, you may find it easier to use those rather than your varifocals or bifocals when using the loupe.

A pen & notebook may be useful if you would like to take notes, although plenty will be available in the studio.

About the tutor
